Finishing Techniques for Mantels and Shelves

 


All WinterBrand mantels and shelves are shipped unfinished.

Painting:
Step 1 -
Select a quality wood primer and latex or oil paint of any color.
Step 2 -
To ensure happiness with the color you choose paint a small portion of the back first.
Step 3 -
On mantels only, remove the scribe molding from the back or the inside of the mantel.
Step 4 -
Prime the mantel or shelf before you paint. Read primer instructions for drying time.
Step 5 -
Paint the mantel or shelf.
Step 6 -
If necessary, paint the mantel or shelf a second time (this is typically with white paint).
Step 7 -
Once dry, apply a polyurethane finish if desired. Test the finish on the back.
Step 8 -
Install the mantel or shelf. For mantels, fasten the scribe molding.
Step 9-
Fill all nail holes with putty or painter's caulk.
   
Staining:
Step 1 -
Pick a quality stain (we recommend Minwax for quality as well as ease of use).
Step 2 -
To ensure happiness with the stain you choose test a small portion of the back first.
Step 3 -
On mantels only, remove the scribe molding from the back or the inside of the mantel.
Step 4 -
Follow the instructions on the stain.
Step 5 -
Stain the mantel or shelf and let dry.
Step 6 -
Once dry, apply a polyurethane finish if desired. Test the finish on the back.
Step 7 -
Install the mantel or shelf. For mantels, fasten the scribe molding.
Step 8 -
Fill all nail holes with the same color putty or staining crayon.
